Horner, William

Born 1884 • Keighley, Yorkshire. Son of Thomas (Tom) Horner (1853-1905) and Sarah Elizabeth Burd (1854-1915). He was a House Painter (1911 Census).

Served as Deckhand, Royal Naval Reserve, H.M. Trawler “Towhee.” Lost when ship hit a mine on 17/06/1917, aged 33. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.

(TOWHEE, was a hired trawler, Adty No 370. Built 1908, 199grt, Hull-reg H.987. Armament: 1-3pdr. In service 10.14-6.17 as minesweeper. Disappeared 15.6.17 in the English Channel.)

He married at Hull on 29 Mar 1904m aged 20. Husband of Sarah Ann Hennah (1881-1957), of 13, Crowthers Buildings South Parade Anlaby Road, Hull (1911 Census), 141, English Street, Hull, 1, Henley Buildings, Vauxhall Grove, Hull and 8, Prince of Wales Terrace, Vauxhall Grove, Hull (War Pension addresses) and later c/0 39, James Road, Southsea (Naval Address). They had two children, George William and Ethel May Horner.
