Hughes, Henry Crowhurst

Born Hammersmith London, 1872. Son of Robert Hughes, of 61 garland Road, Red Hill, Surrey.

Married at Reigate, in 1901. Husband of Florence Elizabeth Parton, of 1, Kates Cottages, Regent Street, Hull (1911 census & war pension address). He was a Glazier and Labourer.

He had joined the army (Rifle Brigade & royal Garrison regiment), at London in 1899, aged 19. Served in India and South Africa and was wounded at Pieters Hill, on 27/2/1900. Discharged after time expired on 6/10/1912. Described as 5 foot, 6.5 inches tall, 154lbs weight, 37-39 inch chest, blue eyes, fair hair, tattoos on both arms, Church of England religion, Character ; “fair” – bad, disobedient and absent.

He enlisted on 19/06/1914. Posted to France, on 19/5/1915. Served in the Rifle Brigade, Labour Corps. Had several misdemeanors including leaving his post with permission at Aldershot, theft of meat (public property) at Etaples, 7/5/1817 and absence from barracks. He served for over three years in France. Was discharged on 21/4/1919, after 13 years and 307 days military service.

Died at Hull, on 13 May 1922, aged 50.
