Humphrey, George Henry

BORN HULL 1887. SON OF JAMES THOMAS HUMPHREY (1856-1937) AND MARY JANE APPLEBY (1858-1924), OF 9. SCARBOROUGH TERRACE, KENT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A NORTH SEA FISHERMAN. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. WORKED AS A LABOURER.

HE MARRIED MINNIE SELINA HUMPHREY, IN 1909 AND LIVED AT 1 WALTHAM TERRACE, WALKER STREET, HULL AND 86 ADELAIDE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD NO CHILDREN.

HE ENLISTED IN THE 11TH EYR (2ND HULL PALS BATTALION), ON 14/09/1914. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 129 LBS WEIGHT, 35.5 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, LIGHT HAIR, FAIR COMPLEXION, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION, TATTOOS ON BOTH ARMS WITH HIS WIFE’S NAME. SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. WAS WOUNDED WITH SHELL SHOCK IN JULY 1916. RETURNED TO FRANCE AND TRANSFERRED TO THE 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 13/04/1917, AGED 30. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW AT 1 WALTHAM TERRACE, WALKER STREET, HULL. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, FRANCE.

HIS BROTHER, GUNNER, CHARLES HUMPHREY, ROYAL MARINES, WAS LOST AT SEA, ON HMS “INVINCIBLE”, 31/05/1916.
