Hurst, Charles Ernest

BORN HULL 1895. . SON OF CHARLES ALFRED HURST & ALICE GERTRUDE HAPPEY, OF 30 , COLTMAN STREET, HULL. ONE OF THREE CHILDREN. HIS FATHER WAS A CASHIER AND BOOK KEEPER FOR LEADING CORN MERCHANTS ON THE HULL HIGH STREET. EDUCATED AT HYMERS COLLEGE HULL. HE WAS MEMBER OF THE OFFICER CADETS. LEADING MEMBER OF THE CHOIR AND SOLOIST. BEFORE JOINING THE ARMY HE WAS TRAINING TO BE AN ENGINEER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. JOINING THE HUSSARS, GUARDS AND THEN THE 11TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS COMMISSIONED INTO THE 6TH YORKSHIRE REGIMENT IN JULY 1915. HE SERVED AT SULVA BAY, GALLIPOLLI, EGYPT AND FRANCE. KILLED IN ACTION ON 14/09/1916, AGED 21. UNMARRIED. HE LEFT £133 IN HIS WILL TO HIS FATHER CHARLES ALFRED HURST.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE HYMERS COLLEGE ROH & ST MATHEWS CHURCH ROH.
BURIED: Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France. HIS GRAVE READS, “I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVETH”.
HIS ONLY BROTHER FRANK REDAN HURST DIED IN HULL IN 1919, AGED 18. HE LEFT A SISTER ALICE.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 23/09/1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.
