Jack, Sidney Johnson

BORN BRIGG, LINCOLNSHIRE, 1892. SON OF GEORGE JACK (1848-1920) AND JANE ANN JOHNSON, OF COTTINGHAM AND BARTON. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. HE JOINED THE 2ND NORTHUMBRIAN BRIGADE TERRITORIAL ARTILLERY, ON 17/07/1912. WORKED AS A WAREHOUSEMAN, IN HULL, LIVING AT 65, ST GEORGES ROAD AND C/O MRS HAXBY, OF 4, RIPON VILLAS, BRUNSWICK AVENUE, HULL.

HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 05/08/1914. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, 38 INCH CHEST. ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 20/04/1915, SERVING AS A BOMBARDIER IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. HE WAS GASSED AT YPRES ON 26/05/1915 & INVALIDED TO ENGLAND, ON 08/06/1915. HE WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE ARMY, AS “UNFIT” ON 01/03/1916, AGED 23. AWARDED THE SILVER BADGE FOR WOUNDS, (NO:1041). HE MARRIED LAVINIA BATEMAN, IN HULL, IN 1916, AND LIVED AT 1, WHITEDALE, AIRLIE STREET, HULL AND 38, JAMES STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE DIED OF HIS WOUNDS IN HULL, IN 1919 AND IS BURIED IN HULL.

Born Brigg, Lincolnshire, 1892. Son of George Jack (1848-1920) and Jane Ann Johnson (1851-1913), of Barton On Humber. Son of a Publican. He was an Engine Cleaner for the Railways (1911 Census) and Warehouseman for J Good & Sons, 65, St Georges Raod, Hull (Army records). He was 5 foot, 9 inches tall, 40-42 inch chest, blue eyes, brown hair, tattoo marks on right wrist, honest, trustworthy and sober, hard working and very reliable.

He enlisted in Hull, on 16/7/1912. Served as Gunner, 2nd Northumbrian Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Promoted to Bombardier, on 22/1/1915. Posted abroad, on 20/4/1915. Gassed at Ypres, on 26/05/1915. Discharged on 1/3/1916. He had served in the army for 3 years and 234 days. Awarded Silver War Badge (no:500258). Died on 29 Mar 1919, aged 26.

He married Lavinia Bateman (1893-1957), at Hull, in December 1916. They had one daughter, Gladys (1917-2006).
