Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL FREDERICK JACKSON 10/627. Born 1884, the eldest child and only son of Walter and Frances Jackson of 1 Belgrave Mansions, Marine Drive, Bridlington. Frederick worked as Cashier at the Halifax Commercial Bank in Hull prior to the war, but enlisted in the first rush of volunteers on 4th September 1914. He served with the original Pals in both Egypt, where the battalion helped defend the Suez Canal from the Turks over the winter of 1915, and on the Somme. He was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 during the fighting for Oppy Wood and his body was never recovered. His name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He was 33 years old. This concludes the dead of May 3rd 1917, a journey we started way back on Day 113. Many more died of wounds sustained that day as we shall discover, but tomorrow brings forth the names of those who lived to die another day. The 10th Battalion lost 50% of its men that day killed, wounded or missing. 69 died, 39 from Hull. As Barrie Barnes writes: “their devotion and unswerving obedience and belief….never faltered in the face of such adversity and sorrow.” They endured.
