A Grocer’s Warehouseman by trade he enlisted on 9th December 1915 and was mobilized on 24th January. It is a reflection of the pressing need for manpower at the front that the Originals had trained for a year or more before sailing for Egypt, whereas new recruits at this stage in the war were given barely 5 months before being thrown into the trenches. George arrived in France on 26th May 1916 and joined the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. George Stanley Jackson was killed in action on 13th November 1916 at Serre on the Somme. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 23 years old.
