Jackson, John

BORN HULL 1863. WIFE LIVED ABOVE. CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE GRIMSBY STEAM TRAWLER, SUNK BY A SUBMARINE, ON 21/03/1917. DROWNED. AGED 54.

Queenborough, built by Mackie & Thomson, Govan in 1898 and owned at the time of her loss by Consolidated Steam Fishing & Ice Co. Ltd., Grimsby, was a British trawler of 165 tons. On March 23rd, 1917, Queenborough was sunk by gunfire by the German submarine U-86 (Friedrich Crüsemann), 106 miles east of Peterhead. The crew were allowed in the boats, but were never heard of again. 9 persons were lost. Seen the location, halfway between Scotland and Norway, and the time of the year, the men most probably died when their lifeboat capsized in heavy weather.
