Jackson, Samuel

BORN HULL, 1887. SON OF SAMUEL JACKSON (1855-1931) & MARY ELIZABETH KIRBY (1858-1947), OF 30, RIPON TERRACE, BRUNSWICK AVENUE AND 11, FERN VILLAS, FERN STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE WAS A CAPSTAN LAD ON THE RAILWAYS, WINCH GOODS ONTO WAGONS.

ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 12/12/1915. SERVED AS DRIVER, SAMUEL JACKSON, ARMY SERVICE CORPS, 795 COMPANY. DISCHARGED WITH SYPHYLLIS, ON 16/08/1918. DIED ON 14/11/1919, AGED 32. (WAR RENSION RECORDS). NO CWGC RECORD.

HIS BROTHER, JOHN WILLIAM JACKSON WAS APPRENTICED TO MESSRS. HARLAND PRINTERS, OF HULL. HE ENLISTED IN HULL SERVED WITH THE 1/4TH EYR. HAD BEEN AT THE FRONT FOR TWELVE MONTHS AND HAD NO HOME LEAVE SINCE BEING OUT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT YPRES, ON 04/04/1916 AND IS COMMEMORATED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER REASSURINGLY TOLD HIS MOTHER THAT “HE WAS KILLED INSTANTLY IN HIS SLEEP” AND DESCRIBED JOHN JACKSON AS “ONE OF BEST LADS” IN THE PLATOON. HE WOULD BE GREATLY MISSED. HE WAS 19 YEARS OLD AND HIS BODY WAS NOT RECOVERED. HIS BEST MATE PTE, F.L “MICKY” BURGOYNE, FROM FIELD STREET, WAS KILLED THE SAME DAY, AGED 18. (HULL DAILY MAIL 22/04/1916).
