Jarvis, Arthur

BORN HULL 1884. SON OF ALFRED & ANN JACKSON ABOVE – 1911 CENSUS. HIS SISTER CHARLOTTE FENN LOST 2 SONS & HER HUSBAND.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE ARTHUR JARVIS 19985. Born in 1884, Arthur was a Labourer by trade and resident at 83 Lee Street, Hull when war broke out. Both his parents, and his brothers, were dead and Arthur’s only relations were four sisters and a handful of nephews and nieces. He had previous military experience having served in the 3rd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in peace time. This meant he received call-up papers and enlisted in Beverley on 11th October 1915 joining the 11th Battalion. Arthur served at Oppy Wood and survived the bloodbath there, but it all proved too much for him and on 8th December 1917 he deserted. Caught and tried by the military authorities, he was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment which was later suspended, then, following a reference from his commanding officer it appears the sentence was remitted on 10th April 1918. Two days later he was dead. A tragic irony that had the sentence stood Arthur would have survived the war albeit behind bars. His body was never recovered and Arthur Jarvis is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial; he was 33 years old.
