BORN HULL 1890. SON OF DANIEL JOHNSON & SARA ANN LAMBERT, 18 WENTWORTH STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS ADDRESS).

A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER.HE ENLISTED IN HULL. WENT TO FRANCE, ON 08/09/1914. SERVED AS LANCE SERGEANT, 8247, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL ON 13/02/1917 “FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY AND DEVOTION TO DUTY. HE HAS PERFORMED CONSISTENT GOOD WORK. THROUGHOUT AND AT ALL TIMES SET A SPLENDID EXAMPLE.” WALTER JOHNSON WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 28TH MAY 1918, AGED 28. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE SOISSONS MEMORIAL, AISNE, FRANCE, WHICH COMMEMORATES 4,000 OFFICERS AND MEN FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM, WHO DIED AT THE BATTLES OF THE AISNE AND MARNE IN 1918, WHO HAVE NO KNOWN GRAVE. WITH HIS PARENTS BOTH DEAD, WALTERS ARMY WAS SHARED SHARED BETWEEN HIS BROTHERS DANIEL, GEORGE AND ALBERT, HIS SISTER SARAH AND HIS SISTER-IN-LAW, MATILDA.
