BORN POPLAR, MIDDLESEX, 1882. SON OF ELIZA ANN CLAYTON & THE LATE WILLIAM JOHNSON, OF 725 HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS A TEACHER AND ASSISTANT MASTER OF MERSEY STREET COUNCIL SCHOOL. HE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ALBANY FOOTBALL CLUB AND PLAYED FOR HULL CITY RESERVES. HE WAS A BRILLIANT BOWLER FOR THE HULL FIRST ELEVEN, WAS A MEMBER OF THE HULL MUSICAL UNION AND A TEACHER AT THE HULL ART SCHOOL.

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL COMMERCIALS. FORMERLY PRIVATE, 609, 10TH EYR AND SERVED IN EGYPYT AND FRANCE. HE TRANSFERRED A,S 28807, LABOUR CORPS. PROMOTED TO SERGEANT AND TRANSFERRED TO THE 10TH LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT (GRIMSBY CHUMS).

HE WAS WOUNDED BY SHRAPNEL, ON 23/12/1917 AND ADMITTED TO BOULOGNE HOSPITAL, ON 02/01/1918. HE DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 12/01/1918, AGED 36. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 16/01/1918. *

HE IS BURIED AT WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY

HE LEFT £400 IN HIS WILL TO HIS BROTHER, SAMUEL EDWARD JOHNSON, HEAD MASTER, OF DRYPOOL SCHOOL. HIS FOUR BROTHERS SERVED WITH THE COLOURS. SERGEANT, GEORGE F. JOHNSON, (EYR), IN FRANCE; SERGEANT, E W JOHNSON, (ASC), IN FRANCE; PRIVATE, CHARLES JOHNSON, (RGA), A DISTINGUISHED THREE QUARTERS WITH HULL FC. AND SCHOOL MASTER; QUARTERMASTER SERGEANT, H.F. JOHNSON, (EYR). ANOTHER BROTHER, WAS HEADMASTER, IN MANCHESTER.
