Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE PERCIVAL JONES 12/49. Born in Egremont, Cumberland in March 1874 Percival was the second of six children to Thomas and Eliza Jones. A Pawnbroker’s Assistant by trade, he married Eleanor Cook Champkin, in Luton, on 20th September 1893. His mother had died three years before and his father had moved to Norfolk with Percival’s younger siblings. Eleanor Jones passed away herself before the war, with Thomas Jones following in November 1914. Percival then took up with Elizabeth Annie Aubrey who gave birth to two sons, Percival Jnr and John. By the time Percival pulled on the uniform of the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment and shipped for Egypt in the December of 1915, he was alone in the world, estranged from his siblings and a widower. He left his sons with a Matilda Ellis of 4 Moylan Road, Hammersmith, London and went off to fight for King and Country, lying about his age to appear younger, so as to be guaranteed a front line posting. Percival Jones was killed in action on 27th May 1916 and buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery; he was 42 years old.
