BORN HULL 1891 SON OF AGNES JOYCE (1867-1929) & EDWIN JOSEPH JOYCE (1864-1946), OF 14 HANNAH’S TERRACE, DALTON STREET, HULL. (1911 CENSUS) AND 17 CRYSTAL TERRACE, COURTNEY STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). ONE OF 8 CHILDREN. THREE BROTHERS, AND FOUR SISTERS, HE WAS EMPLOYED AS A LABOURER AT HARGREAVES, BLACK LEAD MILL. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5 INCHES TALL, 131 LBS WEIGHT, 36-38 INCH CHEST, PHYSICAL CONDITION – “GOOD”, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR, CHURCH OF ENGLAND RELIGION. HE LODGED AT 70 WINCOLMLEE. HE MARRIED IN HULL, IN OCTOBER, 1911. HIS WIFE ANNIE ELIZABETH SKERRETT, & THEIR THREE CHILDREN LIVED AT NO: 10 CRYSTAL TERRACE, WITH HIS EXTENDED FAMILY LIVING IN THE SAME TERRACE.
HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY, ON 19/10/1914. LEFT FOR THE DARDENELLES, ON 14/07/1915, WITH THE 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. HE WAS KILLED AT GALLIPOLI, ON 09/08/1915, AGED 23, TRYING TO TAKE TEKKE TEPPE HILL. HIS BODY WAS NOT RECOVERED AND HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE HELLES MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 295 DAYS. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ANNIE.
