Jubb, Robert

Robert Jubb (1887-1917)

Private, ROBERT JUBB 220041. Born 17th August 1887, the youngest of twelve children to Charles Jubb (1840-1887) and Eliza Stringer (1843-1925), of 3 Mary’s Place, Sutton, Hull. Employed as a labourer. Robert married, Mary Ellen Haigh (1892-1957), at Hull Registry Office on 23rd April 1910. They lived at 8 John’s Place, Chapman Street, Hull (1911 Census) and had three children.

He enlisted in Hull and went to France, on 15/08/1915. He transferred to the 10th East Yorkshire Regiment and was killed in action during the fighting for Oppy Wood on 3rd May 1917. He was buried at Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle. He was 29 years old. His family have done some significant research and have visited the cemetery. There is a photograph of them standing on the monument there. Underneath it says: “Oppy Wood…in the background. Still fenced off as it is unsafe to enter due to an unknown amount of live ammunition still in the woods.” The monument is inscribed with the following words: “TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF ALL MEN OF KINGSTON UPON HULL AND LOCAL UNITS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918”.

In total 209 men of the East Yorkshire’s lost their lives that day. 99 were from Hull. The city must have felt that in it’s very foundations.
