Kemp, George Richard

BORN FLAMBOROUGH 1864. SON OF RICHARD & MARIA KEMP, OF 6 BOTANIC PLACE, STAINIFORTH PLACE, HULL. HIS WIFE ELIZABETH ANN (KNAGGS), LIVED AT MARLBOROUGH TERRACE, BEVERLEY ROAD. HE HAD SERVED IN THE RESRVES FOR 20 YEARS AND HAD THE LONG SERVICE MEDAL. HE SERVED IN THE ANTARTIC SHIP “NIMROD” AND HAD BEEN ON A NUMBER OF WILSON LINE SHIPS. HE WAS LOST AT SEA ON 17/05/1917, AGED 53.

HE LEFT A WIDOW AND SIX CHILDREN. HIS SONS, PRIVATE, JAMES KEMP, 4TH EYR, SERVED WITH COLONEL SHAW. HIS OTHER SONS, FRED AND JOHN WERE ALSO SERVING AT SEA.  GEORGE KEMP’S DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 20/06/1917. * HIS NAME WAS RECORDED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL AT ST THOMAS CHURCH, CAMPBELL STREET, WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN AN AIR RAID DURING WW2.
SS ‘CITO’: Wilsons & North Eastern Railway Shipping Co; 1899; Earle´s Co.; 819 tons; 219.1×30.1×16.5; 144 nhp; 9.5 knots; triple expansion engines. The steamship Cito was intercepted by German torpedo boat destroyers S-53 and V-73, 20 miles East of Noordhinder lightship on May 17th, 1917. The destroyers sank the steamship with gunfire. The captain and ten of the crew were killed.
