BORN HULL MARCH 1897. SON OF JOHN HENRY FOSTER KNAGGS (1867-1946)  & ANNIE ELIZABETH GREEN (1871-1946),  OF MILL HOUSE, LEVEN, HULL. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS, AND SEVEN SISTERS. A FARM FOREMAN. HE RESIDED AT SIGGLESTHORNE, BRANDSBURTON, EAST YORKSHIRE. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 9 INCHES TALL, 36.5 INCH CHEST. HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY, ON 03/06/1916. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 24642, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 14/10/1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 2ND WEST RIDING REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 21/02/1917, AGED 20. SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 2 DAYS. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JOHN. THEY INCLUDED HIS DISC, LETTERS, PHOTOS, POSTCARDS AND WALLET. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, SOMME, FRANCE.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL’S ST MARKS MEMORIAL AND THE LEVEN ROLL OF HONOUR.

HIS BROTHER, ACTING CORPORAL, RICHARD SPENCER KNAGGS, 64049, ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/08/1918, AGED 27 AND IS BURIED AT ASIAGO, VICENZA, VENETO, ITALY. HE MARRIED EMILY KATE KIRK (1888- 1978), AT COTTINGHAM, ON 24/07/1915. LEFT A WIDOW AND SON GEORGE (1918-1982)
