George Creasy Knee, Deputy Town Clerk, Hull

Born Peckham, Surry, 1882. Son of the Reverend, Henry Knee (1854-1913) and Mary Rebecca Creasey (1857-1933); husband of Alice Mellows (1884-1954) of 31, Lincoln Road East, Peterborough. His father was a prominent Baptist Minister in Bristol and Peterborough.

Acting Captain, George Creasy Knee, of the 4th East Yorkshires, was Deputy Town Clerk, of Hull and Son in law, of the Town Clerk of Peterborough.

Articled in 1901, he became a solicitor in 1906. Genial, courteous and a favourite of the legal profession and Municipal officers, he gained rapid promotion. An Assistant Solicitor to Birkenhead Council, he came to Hull in 1910, aged 27. Appointed as Hull’s Assistant Solicitor, in 1910, conducting Corporation prosecutions in the Police Courts. He was Clerk to the Governors of Hymers College and Deputy Steward, of Tupcoates and Myton. He boarded at 44 Park Road, Hull (1911 Census). He married soon after arriving in Hull and lived at Park Avenue.

He was killed on 03/05/1917, aged 35. He enlisted at the outbreak of war and had been at the front for a month. He left a widow and three children.

He is buried at Vis-En-Artois British Cemetery, Harcourt, France. His grave inscription, reads, “WHOSOEVER WILL LOSE HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE SHALL FIND IT”
