Knight, John Welland

BORN HULL 1887. LIVED IN GUILDFORD 1901. SON OF THE LATE SARAH E KNIGHT. A GRAIN PORTER. LIVING AT 2 MARFLEET AVENUE, CRAVEN STREET, HULL (1911) ENLISTED HULL. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 1649, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE ARMY CYCLIST CORPS. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 08/08/1917. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON HULL’S ST CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH MEMORIAL.
Kim Semmence writes on 07/11/2015: Although the collection Soldiers Died in WW1 give his name as John Welland, the Register of Effects has him as John William Knight, with a wife Alice E Knight. I have a 1907 marriage for John Wm Knight and Alice Emma Hardy (1888–1959) and in 1907 they were with the in-laws. Children: George William (1908), Alice E (1913) and Violet L (1916).

His parents are most likely Albert James Knight and Sarah Elizabeth Bilton, who were married at St Charles. For some reason J W wasn’t with them in 1891 (when they were in Scawby) and by 1901 Albert was with his brother in Attercliffe.
