BORN BURTON SALMON, YORKSHIRE, 01/08/1889. SON OF MR WILSON KNOTT (1854-1933) AND HARRIET BROOKS (1856-1941), OF SOUTH MILFORD. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.

HE WORKED AS A SHUNTER FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6 INCHES TALL, 33-35 INCH CHEST, 126 LBS WEIGHT, WESLEYAN RELIGION. LIVED AT 6MAREHAM AVENUE, ENA STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) WORKING AS A RAILWAY GOODS PORTER.

HE MARRIED ROSE FARR (1892-1968) AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, HULL, ON 11/04/1914.  HIS WIFE ROSE KNOTT LIVED AT 65, CECIL STREET, HAWTHORNE AVENUE, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). THEIR ONLY SON, JAMES W. KNOTT DIED IN INFANCY, IN 1915.

HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 11/12/1915. CALLED UP FOR SERVICE, ON 26/04/1916. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 28/07/1916. TRANSFERRED TO THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ON 10/08/1916. DIED OF GAS SHELL POISONING AT 44TH FIELD AMBULANCE, ON 02/04/1917, AGED 27.

HE IS BURIED AT FAUBOURG D’AMIENS CEMETERY, ARRAS, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS AND WEEKLY PENSION OF 13 SHILLINGS AND NINE PENCE WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ROSE, WHO MOVED TO 12 MANCHESTER PLACE, WAVERLEY STREET, HULL.
