BORN SHEFFIELD, 29/03/1878. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM LAMBERT (1850-1897) AND MARY ANN WOODWARD (1854-1913). MARRIED AT ST PETER’S CHURCH, DRYPOOL, HULL, ON 23/12/1896. HIS WIFE HANNAH MARY WATSON (1877-1968) LIVED AT 10 WHITBY AVENUE, WHITBY STREET, HULL. THEY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN. HE SERVED AS AN ENGINE MAN ON THE MINESWEEPER “LENA MELLING”. KILLED BY MINE EXPLOSION OFF RAMSGATE, KENT, ON 23/04/1916, AGED 41. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, KENT.
HIS NAME WAS LISTED ON HULL’S ST MARKS STREET & WILMINGTON ROLLS OF HONOUR. HE LEFT £191 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW AT THIS PROBATE ADDRESS.

Jan Lettens 12/02/2011 Lena Melling, built by Cochrane & Sons, Ltd., Selby in 1915 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 274 tons. On April 23rd, 1916, Lena Melling was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-7 (Georg Haag), 1 1/2 miles southwest from the Elbow lightvessel. 11 persons were lost.
