Private Charles Landamore (1890-1916) of Lockington
Charles Landamore was born in Lockington in January 1890, the son of John Thomas and Nancy Tomlinson Landamore (nee Thirsk).
Charles enlisted in the Army as a private at Beverley the 8 February 1915 with the 3rd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment before transferring to the 7th Battalion and left for France in December 1915. The Battalion was deployed to the southern bend of the Ypres Salient in Belgium. Charles was killed in action, on the 16 February 1916, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium. He was posthumously awarded the 1915 Star and the War and Victory medals.
His death was recorded in the Beverley Guardian of 4 March 1916, as the first war casualty from Lockington.
