BORN MARYLEBONE, MIDDLESEX, 1883. LIVED IN HULL WITH WIFE PHOEBE ADDRESS – 1918 VOTERS. SON OF LATE FRANCIS & ADELINE LANE OF LONDON.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE EDWARD FRANCIS LANE 12/1094. Born in January 1883 in Marylebone, Middlesex Edward was the son of Francis and Adeline Lane of London. He married Phoebe Palmer on Christmas Day 1906 in St.Simon’s, Paddington and the couple travelled north settling in Hull where they resided at 7 Beech Grove, Ringrose Street, Hawthorn Avenue with their children Adeline and Harold. A Labourer by trade, he enlisted at Hull City Hall originally joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. A veteran of Egypt, the Somme and Oppy Wood Edward was transferred to the 11th Battalion in February 1918 when, with manpower seriously depleted, the 12th was disbanded and the two merged. Edward was killed in action on 27th March 1918 during the German Spring Offensive and his body never recovered; he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial; he was 35 years old, a husband and father.
