BORN HULL 1889. SERVED AS “ERNEST COOK”. SON OF BENJAMIN EDWARD LENG & ELIZABETH ANN (TODD) OF 24 , EDWARDS AVENUE, BUCKINGHAM STREET, HULL. ONE OF NINE CHILDREN INCLUDING SEVEN SISTERS. HIS OTHER BROTHER PERCY SURVIVED THE WAR. ERNEST LENG WAS A PLATER’S HELPER BEFORE THE WAR. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL, 140 LBS, 38 INCH CHEST, ‘GOOD’ PHYSIQUE, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR, TATTOOS ON BOTH ARMS.
HE ENLISTED IN BEVERLEY ON 30/08/1914. JOINED THE 6TH EYR PIONEERS AS PRIVATE, NO 10875. HE WAS LATE AND ABSENT 4 TIMES AND ON 2ND MARCH 1915, HE DESERTED AND HAD PAY DEDUCTED. HE RE-ENLISTED UNDER THE NAME ‘COOK’. HE JOINED THE 1.4TH EYR. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON THE 16/09/1916, AGED 27. BURIED: Dernancourt, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France.
