Linford, John

Pte, John Linford, 10th EYR

BORN HULL 1886. SON OF THOMAS & MARGRET LINFORD ABOVE 1901 CENSUS ADDRESS.
Note: Memorium from HDM dated 16/06/1919 COX. “In loving memory of dear husband, William Cox, killed in action 25th April, 1918 (E.Y.R.); also my dear brothers, Harold Linford, died prisoner war, 22nd September, 1918; also George, drowned in Bermuda, June 3rd, 1918. “Ever remembered” by Florrie and sister Lily Boaz.” There is also an article on George Linford of 2/4th EYR and how he died in Bermuda. Confused? John Linford 10898 is listed as wounded in HDM of 4th May 1918. Maybe the names John & Harold were mixed up?
The Hull Daily Mail on 17th January 1919, shows a picture of John Linford in uniform, and the following text: Captain Wm. Borthwick, K.R.R., Lieut. W. M. Asher, and members of the British Help Committee have sent the following letter to Mr Harold Linford, 6, Cottingham-terrace, Drainside, Charles-street, Hull, through the Lord Mayor: Reserve Lazarett 111., Hamburg, 29th Sept 1918. “Dear Lord Mayor. We regret to inform you, in the absence any information regard to his next of kin, that No. 10898 Pte. J. Linford. 10th East Yorks, died in this Lazarette on the 22nd Sept., 1918. He had been here for a period of 10 weeks, and his comrades had done what they could for him in the way of preparing invalid foods and making him comfortable. He was buried in Ohnsdorf Cemetery, Hamburg, the 27th inst.. and was followed to the place of interment by such of his comrades who were able walk. This number included seven officers (two French and five British) and about 25 N.C.O.’s and men (British, French. Belgian, etc.). Two wreaths accompanied the body, one from his comrades and the other front the British officers here. We shall be glad if you will make inquiries in regard to Pte.
