Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE GEORGE EDWARD LOWEN MM 11/1244. Born in 1895 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, George was an only child whose father had died and whose mother Annie had remarried. A Labourer living on Plane Street in Hull when war broke out, he enlisted at City Hall on 11th December 1914 joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. A veteran of Egypt, he was wounded on the Somme in July 1916 but returned immediately to the front and saw out 1916 with the battalion. He was recalled to base in late April 1917 which meant he missed Oppy Wood, returning to the battalion mid-May. It was a lucky escape but alas a temporary reprieve. On 31st January 1918 George was granted two weeks leave and returned home to Hull where he married Hannah Elizabeth Cooke. Their married life was over by Valentine’s Day, and five weeks later George was dead. Badly wounded in the chest, legs and back he was withdrawn to 43rd Casualty Clearing Station where he died on 24th March 1918. He is buried at Bac-du-Sud British Cemetery; he was 22 years old.
