Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE HERBERT SPENCE LOWTHER 12/881. Born in 1886, Herbert was the son of Joseph Lowther. A Fish Worker by trade he married Elizabeth Ellen Maltby on 16th May 1909 and the couple lived at 1 Trent Avenue, Eastbourne Street, Hull with their three children James, Elizabeth and George. His medical records show a considerable number of tattoos suggesting his love life may have been a little more complicated prior to this, but that is another story altogether. Herbert enlisted on 5th October 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals. His disciplinary record suggests a man not too keen on returning to the rigors of military discipline after a pass, as he appears to have overstayed pretty much every one. I took a liking to Herbert immediately. He was killed in action on the Somme at Beaumont Hamel 13th November 1916 and he is buried in Euston Road Cemetery; he was 29 years old.
