BORN LEEDS 1899. SON OF GEORGE LOWTHER & ANN SOWERBY. WIFE POLLY (KIRLEW) & 4 CHILDREN LIVED AT 12 , OUTRAM TERRACE, RODNEY STREET, HULL. HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 30/10/1918, AGED 19.
Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE RICHARD LOWTHER 11/229. Born in 1899 in Leeds, Richard enlisted in Hull on 7th September 1914 joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. He was seriously underage. Just 15 when he signed up to fight for King and Country, yet his little lie went unquestioned and a boy soldier he became. He survived all the Pal’s major campaigns from Egypt to the Somme, Oppy Wood to the Spring Offensive and came through them all only to fall at the last hurdle. Richard died of wounds sustained during the final push for victory on 30th October 1918 less than two weeks from safety. He is buried in Kezelberg Military Cemetery; still just 19 years old.
