Private William Lowthorpe (1879-1918)

William Lowthorpe was born in 1879 in Beverley. He was the son of Shadwell and Mary (nee Mitchell) Lowthorpe,

On 23 May 1904 William married Elizabeth Scrowton Clark in St Mary’s, Sculcoates and, by 1911; they were living in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, with William’s younger brothers, Charles and Shadwell, and had two daughters, Lena and Edna. They lived at  21, Malpas Avenue, Spital Terrace, Gainsborough.

He enlisted as a private in the 7th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment at the beginning of the war. He died of wounds received on 28 May 1918 in France.

William is buried in the Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt and is remembered in the Gainsborough WW1 Roll of Honour.

His grave inscription, reads “A BEAUTIFUL MEMORY LEFT BEHIND”
