BORN HULL 1887. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM MASSAM (1851-1930) AND ELIZA PURVIS (1856-1925), OF 28 SCARBOROUGH STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND FIVE SISTERS. EDUCATED AT SCARBOROUGH STREET, SCHOOL. HE WAS AN ASSITANT FOR MESSRS, J. HEWETTON, FISH MERCHANTS (1911 CENSUS).

ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 22102, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 20TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS (1ST TYNESIDE IRISH). DIED OF WOUNDS, AT NO:1 CANADIAN CASULATY CLEARING STATION, ON 12/04/1917, AGED 29. BURIED IN FRANCE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JOHN.

HIS BROTHER, HAROLD MASSAM, WAS ON LOST ON THE MINESWEEPER, ‘LEANDROS’, ON 06/08/1915, AGED 35.
