BORN HULL 1894. SON OF WILLIAM MAYES (1857-1903) & FRANCES MAY SMITH (1858-1916), OF, 11, NEWTON COURT, ALBRO STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS) AND 16, LOCKWOOD TERRACE, LOCKWOOD STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). HE HAD SIX BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. WORKED AS A FLOUR BAG SHAKER.

ENLISTED HULL. SERVED WITH THE NELSON BATTALION, ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION. KILLED IN ACTION ON, 28/12/1917, AGED 24. COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE DANSOM LANE MEMORIAL, HULL.
