BORN HULL 1896. SON OF WILLIAM MAYES (1857-1903) & FRANCES MAY SMITH (1858-1916), OF, 11, NEWTON COURT, ALBRO STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS) AND 16, LOCKWOOD TERRACE, LOCKWOOD STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). HE HAD SIX BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. WORKED AS A HOIST DRIVER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE  1/5TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 26/10/1917 AGED 21. COMMEMORATED ON THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM

HE WAS ONE OF THREE BROTHERS KILLED IN THE WAR. THEY WERE:-

JAMES MAYES, 4013, ROYAL VAL DIVISION, NELSON BN, KILLED ON 28/12/1917, AGED 24, COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
