Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL JOSEPH RONALD HERBERT MAYOR 10/318. Born 1895 in Louth, Lincolnshire, the eldest son of Joseph and Ethel Mayor of 26 Cave Street, Beverley Road, Hull. Joseph was a Clerk before the war, but enlisted in the mad rush of September 1914 and served with the Pals through Egypt and the Somme before being injured during the attack on Oppy Wood. He was evacuated to the base camp at Rouen, but died of wounds on 18th September 1917. He was buried at St.Sever Cemetery Extension. He had a young sister, who will have been nine years old when he died. She was twelve years his junior and his parents only other child suggesting they may have had trouble conceiving. How they must have felt his loss we cannot begin to imagine. Rouen was the base camp for a number of hospitals, training camps and supply depots; the dead from the hospitals were initially buried in St. Sever’s main civic cemetery, but this was completely full by September 1916 hence the need for an ‘extension’.
