McArthur, DCM, David

Born Dundee, Forfarshire, 1884. Son of John Mc Arthur and Helen Stirton Young (1860-1945), of 3, Johns Place, Adelaide Street, Hull (War Pension address). He had five brothers and one sister. A Mill worker, at the Jutes works, Dundee. He joined the army aged 19, on 09/01/1901. He deserted from Fort George, on 06/12/1901. Described as 5 foot, 5.5 inches tall, dark brown hair, grey eyes, tattoos on right arm and wrist.

He enlisted in Dundee. Served with the 1st Seaforth Highlanders. killed in action, in the Persian Gulf, on 20/04/1916. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) on 11/03/1916, for “Conspicuous bravery. when the remainder f the team had been put out of action by the enemy’s heavy fire, he continued to keep his gun going and by his bravery and resource, did much to save the situation when the line began to withdraw.”

His army effects were shared with his mother Helen, sister, Ellen C. Platt and brother Thomas. His death is not recorded in the CWGC records?

His brother, Gunner, James McArthur (1897-1917), 646100, Royal field Artillery, “D” Bty. 236th Bde., was killed in action, on 22/07/1917, aged 20.
