BORN GRIMSBY 1894. SON OF EMMA McCARTHY, 10 CAMDEN STREET, BOULEVARD AND LATER WOODBINE, 19 NEW WALK, BEVERLEY. HE WAS A SINGLE MAN AND LIVED WITH HIS ONLY BROTHER. REGINALD AND ONLY SISTER ANNIE. THEY LIVED AT 127 WINCOLMLEE (HIS ARMY ADDRESS). HE LISTED HIS OCCUPATION AS “SHOP MANAGER”. HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 19/11/1914. AND JOINED THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (THE HULL PALS SPORTSMEN BATTALION). HE SERVED IN EGYPT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 08/03/1916. WAS PROMOTED TO LANCE SERGEANT, ON 20/07/1916 AND ACTING SERGEANT ON 01/10/1916. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 22. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE SENT TO HIS MOTHER EMMA, WHO MOVED TO BEVERLEY. THEY INCLUDED A FRENCH BOOK, ENCYCLOPEDIA, A BOOK OF POETRY, A WHISTLE, A PAIR OF SIZZORS, A CHOCOLATE BOX AND LETTERS. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HENGATE BEVERLEY MEMORIAL. HE IS BURIED AT QUEENS CEMETERY, PUISIEUX. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “WHEN WE CRAVE AND THOU SAYEST “NO” “BENEDICAMUS DOMINO”.
