BORN HULL 1895. ALIAS ‘GEORGE WILLIAM HORSFALL’. HE LIVED IN LEEDS. ENLISTED AT PRESTON, MANCHESTER. SERVED WITH ‘C’ COMPANY, 22ND MANCHESTER REGIMENT. SON OF WILLIAM & FRANCES McCULLOCH, OF 90 ROSEBANK ROAD, BELLE VUE ROAD, LEEDS. (HIS SURNAME IS SOMETIMES SPELT McCULLOCK). BEFORE THE WAR HE HAD WORKED AS AN ELECTRIC STERNOGRAPHER, TAKING SHORT HAND DICTATION. WOUNDED AT THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. HE DIED OF WOUNDS AT ETAPLES HOSPITAL, ON 17/06/1917, AGED 21. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, FRANCES.
HE IS BURIED AT ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “HOW SHORT A LIFE HOW GREAT THE SACRIFICE”
