BORN HULL 1871. SON THE LATE JOHN & MARY McLACHLAN, OF 8 KINGSTON VILLAS, ESTCOURT STREET, HULL. A SHIP WRIGHT, LIVING AT THIS ADDRESS WITH HIS WIFE MARY ANN AND THREE CHILDREN. (1911 CENSUS). HE SERVED ON THE STEAM SHIP “JAFFA”, LOST AT SEA, ON 02/02/1918, AGED 47. HIS NAME IS RECORDED IN THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY RECORDS. HIS SON ALLEN McLACHLAN, WAS KILLED IN 1915. HIS BROTEHR WAS KILLED WITH THE CANADIANS. HIS BROTHER IN LAW, PTE, WALTER HERBERT SCALES, CEF WAS KILLED ON 27TH MAY 1915.
Jaffa SS was built as a steel British Merchant steamship in 1897. Dimensions: 260.1´x35.2´x16´ Powered: Triple expansion engine 251nhp. 12 knots. 1,383 grt, defensively-armed.
On the 2nd February 1918 when on route from Boulogne for Southampton whe was torpedoed by German submarine UB-30 and sunk when 3 miles E by S from Owers Light Vessel, English Channel. 10 lives lost. Owned by Wilson Line, Hull.
