BORN HULL 1880. SON OF JAMES WOOD MECK (1855-1938) & CLARA SMITH (1858-1939), OF HULL. SON OF HAIRDRESSER AND UMBRELLA MAKER AT 25 PARAGON STREET, HULL. HE MARRIED ANNIE ELIZABETH GAIR, AT HULL IN 1905. WORKED AS A HAIRDRESSSER. THEY HAD TWO DAUGHTERS, CLARA AND AUDREY. HE WAS DROWNED ON THE FISHING VESSEL, “YARMOUTH”, ON 08/11/1915, AGED 36. HIS BROTHER, L/CPL, BERNARD MEEK, 9TH NFUS, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 07/07/1916, AGED 30
On November 8th, 1915, the British steel trawler YARMOUTH, left Grimsby and went missing. She was not heard of ever since.
When the steam trawler YARMOUTH (GY334) arrived at her home port of Grimsby on Saturday it was reported that when some 50 miles from Spurn Point the second engineer, Fred Wilmore, who had just ended his watch below, jumped overboard. The vessel was at once brought about, but Wilmore made no effort to save himself, and called out “Good-bye”, threw up his hands and sank.
