BORN BEVERLEY. SON OF ROSE HANNAH MEEK, OF 40 YEOMAN STREET, REDCAR, YORKS, AND THE LATE DAVID MEEK. ENLISTED BEVERLEY. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 05/01/1916, AGED 27. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE BEVERLEY WAR MEMORIAL, MEMORIAL GARDENS.

James William Meek was born at Wawne in 1889. He was the son of David Meek and his wife Rose Anna, of 22 Eastgate, Beverley.

Pre-war, James William Meek joined the Territorial Army.

He was mobilized as Private Meek of ‘B’ Company, 5th Battalion, Princess of Wales’s Own Yorkshire Regiment (The Green Howards). He arrived at Boulogne on 18 April 1915.

In December 1915, the 50th Division was ordered to take over trenches south-east of Ypres. 150th Brigade was positioned in the front line facing towards Shrewsbury Forest, near Zillebeke. It was in these trenches James William Meek was killed.

James was unmarried although back home in Beverley he left behind a girlfriend. She left two memorials in the local paper. Her name was Ethel but did not give a surname.
