Private Edward Melbourne (1894-1915)

Edward Melbourne was born in Beverley in 1894, the youngest of four sons of John William and Mary Therese Melbourne

Edward was working as a farm labourer when he enlisted in the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Hussars aged 20.

The company was involved in the battle of St Julien, the battle of Frezenburg ridge and the battle of Bellewaarde Ridge, which is where Edward was wounded and died from his wounds aged 21 on 15 June 1915.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Roll of Honour, the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster and on the Beverley War Memorial.
