He worked as a Coal Miner, described as 5 foot, 7 inches tall, 145 lbs weight, 38-40.5 inch chest, grey eyes, brown hair, scar on the back of his head, Church of England religion.

Married Mary Ann Barns Lee, at St Marys South Shields, on 24 Dec 1904. They had two daughters, Margaret and Mary Ann. They lived at 17 Eleanor Terrace Tyne Dock Shields Durham (1911 Census); 47, Walcott Street, Hull (Army records address) and Havelock Terrace, Bean Street, Hull (War Pension address).

Enlisted South Shields, on 06/09/1914. Trained at Newcastle, Aylesbury, Halton Park, High Wycombe, and Dalton Caps. Served with the 14th Durham Light Infantry. Promoted Corporal, on 04/05/1915. Posted to France, on 11/09/1915. Promoted Lance Sergeant, on 24/09/1915. Killed at Loos, on 28/09/1915. He served in the army for 1 year and 22 days, Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.

His army effects were left to his widow, Mary Ann B, who returned to Hull.
