He enlisted on 13/6/16. Called up on 1/9/1916. Posted to France, on 14/7/1917. Served as a machine gunner in the East Yorkshire Regiment and Durham Light Infantry for 2 years and 251 days. He re-enlisted in the No:1 Coy, Royal Army Medical Corps, working at the 53rd General Hospital, Constantinople. Served another 248 days. Discharged on 21/1/1920 with 30% disability. Died of Pulmonary Philesis, on 27/10/1922.

He married Harriet Gardiner (1898-1944), at Hull, on 18 Oct 1919. They lived at 5, Wentworth Avenue, Field Street, Hull (war pension address).
