Hull Pals Memorial Post. L/CPL JAMES METCALFE 10/702. Born December 1892, James was the son of William Metcalfe of 59 Oakland Cottages, Waterworks Lane, Cottingham. One of the original Pals, he queued in the long lines of September 1914 to join the then fledgling battalion to play his part in the great adventure in Europe. James trained in Hornsea, Beverley, Ripon and York throughout 1915 before shipping to Egypt that December. The Pals were reposted to the trenches of the Western Front in March 1916, and James will have been present throughout the dreadful campaigns on the Somme and at Oppy Wood that took so many of his comrades. He was killed in action on 27th April 1918 in the small hours of the morning, when a 10th Battalion raiding party, having waited out a barrage from their artillery, launched itself upon German positions around La Becque Farm. Overall the raid was a “success”, with the official report stating that at least 75 enemy soldiers had been killed, and 24 taken prisoner, as well as a machine gun captured. James was one of six men who didn’t make the journey back. He is buried at Cinq Rues Military Cemetery, Hazebrouck; he was 25 years old.
