Millett, John Richard

BORN HULL, 09/11/1878. SON OF JOHN RICHARD MILLETT (1852-1886) AND SARAH BOSTOCK JARVIS (1855-1919). HIS MOTHER REMARRIED AND BECAME SARAH WALLACE, LIVING IN BRADFORD. HE HAD FIVE SISTERS AND A BROTHER, ARTHUR ERNEST MILLETT. A SEAMAN. HE SERVED ON THE TRAWLER ‘OTHELLO II’. LOST AT SEA, WITH NINE CREW, WHEN THEIR SHIP HIT A MINE ON 31/10/1915. HE WAS 36 YEARS OLD. HE HAD MARRIED ON 01/09/1901 AND LEFT WIDOW, FLORENCE WARD & THEIR SIX CHILDREN AT 93, FLINTON STREET, HULL (CWGC NAVAL ADDRESS). HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 96/11/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON HULL’S LIVERPOOL STREET SHRINE (Hull Daily Mail 30 August 1916)

HIS ONLY BROTHER, ARTHUR ERNEST MILLETT, WAS A REGULAR SOLDIER, MARRIED AND LIVING IN BRADFORD. ARTHUR SERVED WITH KING’S ROYAL RIFLE CORPS, FOR 14 YEARS AND WAS KILLED AT SALONIKA, ON 28/07/1918, AGED 32.

Othello II, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Ltd., Beverley in 1907 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 206 tons.
On October 31st, 1915, Othello II was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-6 (Matthias Graf von Schmettow), off Leathercoat. 9 persons were lost.
