Monsen, William Ernest

BORN BEVERLEY 1871. SON OF JESSIE. WIFE JANE ELIZABETH MONSEN (NEE SEDMAN), NEWLAND AVENUE. HE SERVED IN THE SHIP COALING FLEET AT SCAPA FLOW. HIS SHIP BLEW UP AND THERE WERE NO SURVIVORS. LEFT WIDOW AND TWO DAUGHTERS. HIS WIFE RECEIVED A WAR PENSION OF 20 SHILLINGS A WEEK. HIS DAUGHTER THELMA (SYMMONS) DESCRIBED THEIR FAMILY LIFE, IN THE HULL BOOK, “KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING.”

On November 17th, 1916, the British steamer SS Canganian, on a voyage from Methil to Scapa Flow was and reported missing. Canganian was most probably sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-29 (Ernst Rosenow), probably SE of Montrose. 13 persons were killed. Allen Tony 17/11/2008 Canginian SS was a British Cargo Steamer of 1,143 tons built in 1900. On the 17th November 19016 she struck a mine and sank in the North Sea Se of Montrose laid by German submarine UC-29 when on route from Methil to Scapa Flow carrying a cargo of coal. 18 persons lost.
