Murray, James Joseph

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE JAMES JOSEPH MURRAY 11/373. Born in August 1891, James the only son of Maria Murray of ‘Cappa’, Kilrush, County Clare. A Fisherman by trade, he was working out of Hull when war broke out and enlisted at City Hall on 8th September 1914. James trained with The Pals throughout the following year, being twice reprimanded for disappearing on duty, suggesting a wayward streak perhaps not entirely in keeping with strict with Military Discipline. The Battalion sailed for Egypt in December 1915, but James wasn’t with them. He was hospitalised in Ripon with lung problems and had died of Tuberculosis on 23rd September 1915. He is buried in Ripon Cemetery, North Yorkshire; a young man of 24.

His army pension went to his mother Maria in Ireland.
