BORN HULL 1892. SON OF WILLIAM NELSON (1868-1944) AND MARY ELIZABETH NELSON (1874-1958), OF 92 SPRING STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). BROTHER OF WILLIAM (1892-1921), EDGAR (1902-1972) AND MAY VICTORIA BROADLEY (1897-1966). A SHOEMAKER, LIVING AT 10 SPRING STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS).

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 10/03/1916, AGED 21 YEARS AND 11 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 2.5 INCHES TALL, 123 LBS WEIGHT, 34.5 INCH CHEST. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 5301, 2/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 14/09/1916. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 72703, PRINCE OF WALES OWN (WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT), ON 16/08/1918. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, DURING OUT POST DUTY. ON 28/08/1918, AGED 26. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH OCTOBER 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * HE HAD SERVED FOR 2 YEARS AND 173 DAYS AND WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL FOR BRAVERY.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, MARY. SHE REQUESTED HIS DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL AND MILITARY MEDAL FROM THE AUTHORITIES, HOWEVER THERE IS NO RECORD OF THESE AWARDS. HE IS BURIED AT CAESTRE MILITARY CEMETERY, NORD, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER IN THOUGHT”

HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, WILLIAM NELSON, ARMY SERVICE CORPS, DIED OF WAR RELATED INJURIES, ON 13/05/1921. 9A SPRING STREET, HULL WAR PENSION ADDRESS.
