Newbury, George William

BORN HULL 1890. SON OF SAMUEL NEWBURY (1849-1929) & LATE ELIZABETH ANN COLLINSON (1850-1921) OF 41 HADDON STREET, HULL. SON OF A FISHERMAN AND FISH DOCK LABOURER. ONE OF ELEVEN SIBLINGS, HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND SIX SISTERS. FOUR SONS WERE LOST IN THE WAR.

HE WORKED AS A TRAWLER, TRIMMER. ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE. LOST AT SEA ON 13/11/1915, AGED 25. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY ROH, AND .TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON.

On November 26th, 1915, the British cargo ship SHIPCOTE, left Archangel for Le Havre with a cargo of grain in bags, and went missing. She was not heard of ever since. Read more at wrecksite: https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?203377

HIS BROTHER, JOHN CLARKE NEWBURY, 4TH EYR, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 01/06/1916, AGED 21

HIS BROTHER, SKIPPER, DAVID COLLINSON NEWBURY, OF S/T “FITROY”, DIED ON 11/10/1915, AGED 38, WHEN HIS SHIP HIT A MINE.

HIS BROTHER, SAMUEL NEWBURY DIED IN JUNE 1916, AGED 39.
