Newbury, John Clarke

BORN HULL 1894. SON OF SAMUEL NEWBURY (1849-1929) & ELIZABETH ANN COLLINSON (1850-1921), OF 41, HADDON STREET, HAWTHORNE AVENUE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS AN ENGINE CLEANER, FOR THE HULL AND BARNSLEY RAILWAY LINE.

HE HAD ENLISTED IN THE HULL TERRITORIALS, ON 29/02/1912 AND ENLISTED WHEN WAR BEGAN ON 05/08/1914. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 17/04/1915. SERVED WITH “D” COMPANY, 4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT.  HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 01/06/1916, AGED 22. HE HAD BEEN IN THE ARMY FOR 4 YEARS AND 95 DAYS. A SINGLEMAN. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO FATHER SAMUEL WHO LOST FOUR SONS DURING THE WAR.

HE IS BURIED AT LINDENHOEK CHALET MILITARY CEMETERY, BELGIUM.

HIS BROTHER, DAVID COLLINSON NEWBURY, SKIPPER, OF THE “FITROY”, WAS LOST WITH ALL HANDS, ON 11/10/1915, AGE 41, WHEN HIS SHIP STRUCK A MINE. ANOTHER BROTHER, GEORGE WILLIAM NEWBURY, MERCHANT NAVY, WAS LOST ON THE STEAM SHIP “SHIPCOATE”, ON  13/11/1915, AGED 25. ANOTHER BROTHER SAMUEL NEWBURY, A FISHERMAN, DIED AT HULL, IN JUNE 1916, AGED 39.

HIS BROTHER, SERGEANT,  FRANCIS (FRANK) NEWBURY, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, ALSO SERVED.
