Ernest Newell was born at Hull in 1892. Son of Ernest J Newall and Ada Mary Mason.

He married Annie Beardshaw (1892-1961), at Hull in 1913. he was 24 married and living at 5 Whitby Grove, Rhodes Street, Hull, with his wife and child. He was a Second Engineer aboard the S/T Mallabar H754. He had been working on the ship for five years. The vessel left Hull for a fishing trip on 20 December 1915. It was posted as missing on 27 December 1915. which was lost with all 9 hands on 3 January 1916 as a result of enemy action in the North Sea.

The hull steam trawler MALABAR (H754) left Hull for a fishing trip in the North Sea on 20/12/1915 with 9 crew. She was last seen on January 1916 and posted missing. It was a steam propelled fishing vessel built in 1903. It was 171 tonnes, had dimensions of 32 x 6.5 metres. It was built of steel and was powered by 1 triple expansion engine, I single boiler, 1 screw. Its power was 45 nhp and it had a speed of 10 knots. The vessel was owned by Jull Steam Fishing and Ice Co. Ltd. Kingston Upon Hull. It was built by Cook, Welton and Gemmel Ltd., Beverley The Engine was built by Amos & Smith Ltd., Kingston Upon Hull. IMO Number 118761. The date of the loss varies between data sources – at either 27 December 1915 in bad weather or 3 January 1916 by enemy action – Nobody survived to tell the story.
